“The Human IPod” proof on Flipagram

I know I brand myself as a “Human IPod“, playing and mashing songs from every era to please audiences, and create lasting memories. It might sound like a ‘pitch’, but when it works, there’s proof in the audiences faces…..Some musicians just talk about how good a gig was (how they connected with an audience, etc), but you sometimes never actually see it for how crazy good it was (apart from the odd photo). But sometimes your lucky to capture these moments on film. And further to this, your lucky if you know how to turn it into a Flipagram (The latest and greatest way to create ‘moments’). This was the case from a recent show at the Madison. Ok, it’s 2am, the house lights are on, my guitar is put away, the piano and PA are turned off, and this crowd just wants more songs from me. Who needs a DJ? This is the power of live music, this is the stuff that you can’t let get to your head, because it’s not real. The amount of cheering and screaming I’ve been experiencing over the past month has been pretty over whelming. Who knew a mash of crowd pleasing songs could turn into a 15 minute encore of screaming millennial Torontoians?  Click the link below to see the Flipagram.

I Read the News Today, Oh Boy

25 May

Screen Shot 2016-06-08 at 11.17.46 PMWay back in the early 2000’s, an entertainment journalist for my hometown newspaper (The Mississauga News) wanted to do an article about my then current indie album ‘Carnies’, and how I was preparing to promote and perform it in the UK. Fast forward to May 2016, on a cool Sunday evening, hanging with my family, I received a call from the same entertainment journalist – out of nowhere. Screen Shot 2016-06-09 at 11.23.12 PMUpon answering the phone his name (Mike Beggs) didn’t ring a bell, but after mentioning the last time we spoke, I was transported from present to the past and back to the present. He saw my name posted on Fionn MacCools performance boards performing here there and anywhere around the GTA, and wanted to find out what I was up to these days. I then gave him a ‘fly on the wall’ look at my current state of mind, of how I now brand (or perceive) myself as a singer/songwriter/marketer and human iPod (on shuffle). It was a great article in my opinion and you can read it here.

The Brendon Gomez Band?

Being a solo act is great, but sometimes something fools the public to think that your in a band.
Think “Dave Mathews Band’ or ‘Alan Parson’s Project’. These are bands with multiple people, but the bands have people in it named “Dave Mathews” and “Alan Parsons”. As I perform, I’ve started to get asked ‘Am I A Band’? I hope and think and say ‘no’. Screen Shot 2016-06-09 at 11.33.05 PMThen when my show is done and I get paid, 9/10 times I’ve been noticing that the envelope of Canadian Tire money (that’s a joke), actually has written on it – ‘Brendon Gomez Band’. I stop and then think ‘could i do, or should I do this’? Become a band of ‘1’, with some sort of name extension. Would that sound legit, or too 1998? I guess the bonus of being in a band, is that band’s always like hanging out in music stores. And to me that’d be pretty cool hanging out in places like Steve’s Music, Guitar World, or  Long and McQuade, having conversations about musical toys, staring at walls of walls of guitar and other swank gear. Gee its’ good to be in a band.
